No fewer than six persons were injured on Monday after a fire outbreak rocked Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, prompting an emergency shutdown of the Lagos airspace.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria confirmed the incident in a statement, saying coordinated emergency response teams were immediately deployed to contain the blaze and rescue trapped personnel.
According to FAAN, the fire, which reportedly originated from the server room on the first floor of the terminal, affected operations at the airport’s international wing, forcing authorities to temporarily suspend flight movements in line with safety protocols.
The agency disclosed that 14 persons who were initially trapped inside the Control Tower were successfully rescued following the deployment of a crane and other emergency equipment.
“Six persons — three males and three females — sustained varying degrees of injury and are currently in stable condition,” FAAN stated.
One of the injured victims was transferred to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further medical attention, while others received immediate treatment.
As part of precautionary measures, the sixth floor of the affected facility was completely evacuated to support ongoing firefighting operations and to mitigate further risks.
FAAN said the fire within the departure hall had been largely contained as of press time, with responders maintaining close surveillance to prevent a resurgence or spread to adjoining sections of the terminal.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has commenced moves to install a temporary Control Tower to fast-track the restoration of full airport operations.
The authority assured passengers and stakeholders that all established emergency procedures were promptly activated and that it was working closely with relevant agencies to safeguard lives, infrastructure and operational integrity.
Further updates, FAAN added, would be communicated as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
