In a historic boost for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has announced that it will supply up to 65 million litres of petrol daily for domestic consumption, surpassing national demand and positioning the country on the path to fuel self-sufficiency.
The refinery plans to export an estimated 15–20 million litres of surplus fuel to international markets.
President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, disclosed the development in Lagos, confirming that a structured offtake agreement has been signed with selected marketers to ensure nationwide distribution and curb supply disruptions.
“We have agreed on an offtake framework to supply up to 65 million litres daily for the domestic market. Any surplus, estimated at between 15 and 20 million litres, will be exported,” Dangote said.
Nigeria currently consumes between 50 and 60 million litres of petrol daily, meaning the refinery’s output not only meets local demand but also leaves room for exports, a move that could save billions of dollars in foreign exchange previously spent on fuel imports.
Analysts say this development could ease pressure on the naira, strengthen external reserves, and stabilize the trade balance.
The refinery’s ramp-up comes amid growing calls to end decades of dependence on imported fuel and recurrent supply shortages.
The structured distribution model is designed to eliminate bottlenecks and discourage speculative practices that have historically disrupted the market.
During a recent visit to the facility, NNPC Limited Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bayo Bashir Ojulari, described the refinery as a transformative asset for national energy security and industrial growth.
“This plant was designed for 650,000 barrels per day. None of us thought it would even touch 550,000. What we saw live today was 661,000 barrels per day. These are live parameters, not reports or photographs,” Ojulari stated, praising the plant’s operational performance.
With the refinery now exceeding domestic demand, Nigeria is poised to transition from chronic fuel shortages to energy self-reliance, while leveraging surplus production for exports, further consolidating the nation’s position in the global energy market.
