Tech billionaire and Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, has admitted to having extramarital affairs with two Russian women but denied any involvement with victims of the late financier, Jeffrey Epstein.
The revelation came during a Tuesday meeting with staff of the Gates Foundation, weeks after initially dismissing reports linking him to Epstein’s controversial circle.
“I did have affairs, one with a Russian bridge player I met at bridge events, and another with a Russian nuclear physicist through business activities,” Gates told foundation staff, according to The Wall Street Journal.
He insisted he “did nothing illicit” during his friendship with Epstein, whom he met in 2011—three years after Epstein was convicted of soliciting prostitution from a minor. Gates described the association as “a huge mistake.”
“I never spent any time with his victims or the women around him. I apologise to those drawn into this because of my mistake,” he added.
Gates also acknowledged ignoring early warnings from his then-wife, Melinda Gates, about Epstein. “Knowing what I know now makes it a hundred times worse, not only because of his past crimes, but also the ongoing bad behaviour,” he said.
The tech mogul expressed concern about potential reputational damage to the Gates Foundation, saying: “It is the opposite of the values and goals of the Foundation. Our work is very reputationally sensitive, and people can choose whether to work with us.”
