Former senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, on Tuesday said her decision to join the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State was in response to sustained calls from residents who, according to her, want the “continuity” of her past achievements in public office.
Obasanjo, daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, spoke at the 2026 Ramadan Lecture organised by the Ogun State chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria in Abeokuta.
The event, themed “Fasting Beyond Hunger: Sustaining Hope and Integrity in an Era of Economic Inflation,” was held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto.
She said many residents had approached her to “repeat the good works” she carried out as Commissioner for Health and later as senator representing Ogun Central, insisting that her governorship ambition was not driven by popularity or political gamesmanship.
According to her, “People came to me and said they wanted me to repeat the good things I did before and even do more. They said I was given a small position in the past and performed well, so they want me to accept a bigger responsibility as governor.
“At first, I ignored them. But when I returned home, more people reminded me of what I had done for them. I later accepted when I became convinced that the call was divinely inspired.”
Obasanjo maintained that her entry into the race was borne out of a desire to bring governance closer to the people and deepen the dividends of democracy across the state.
“My declaration is not for popularity. I am already known across the globe. This journey is about service, and it will be positive. By God’s grace, we will win,” she said.
She pledged that no resident of Ogun State would be marginalised on account of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation if elected governor in 2027.
“You all know what I did as commissioner. I will exceed expectations as governor.
“We also know the remarkable contributions women continue to make in Ogun State,” she added.
In his lecture, the guest speaker, Sheikh Abdulfatai Raji As-Thaqofy, underscored the spiritual and moral significance of fasting, describing it as a tool for discipline, resilience and societal reform.
He urged Muslims to take full advantage of Ramadan, noting that fasting, one of the pillars of Islam, was divinely ordained for the benefit of believers and should not be taken for granted.
The event drew clerics, media practitioners and political stakeholders from across the state.
