… Human Rights Activists Back Calls For Transparency

Wives and family members of Nigerian military officers detained over an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu staged a protest in the Federal Capital Territory on Friday, demanding transparency and immediate access to their husbands.
The protesters, accompanied by human rights activists including Omoyele Sowore and Barrister Deji Adeyanju, said their husbands had spent more than five months in detention without being formally arraigned before a court.
“For more than 160 days, our families have lived in uncertainty and fear. Today, we are here to demand justice in accordance with the Constitution,” the women said.
“Our husbands are entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court of law.”
The protesters also raised concerns over inconsistent government narratives surrounding the case. Initially, officials claimed that N12 billion had been recovered from one officer’s account.
The figure was later revised to N835 million held in a company account, while allegations shifted from indiscipline to conspiracy to commit a coup.
“These changing stories have deepened our anxiety. If there is evidence, it must be presented openly in court. We want transparency and due process,” they said.
Appealing directly to President Tinubu, the First Lady, and national leaders, the women urged intervention in the matter.
“We are not enemies of the military. Our husbands, fathers, and children have served this country faithfully. We ask only for access, clarity, and protection,” they added.
The demonstration highlights growing public concern over the prolonged detention of the officers, raising questions about civil liberties and the rights of suspects under the Nigerian Constitution.
