A former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, has revealed that his entry into the Nigeria Police Force was sparked by a personal encounter with corruption on the road.
Ehindero said that while travelling from Abeokuta to Ibadan, he was stopped near Government College, Ibadan by a police sergeant who demanded a bribe.
“I did not have the amount he demanded, and he refused to release my vehicle particulars. Eventually, I was forced to buy him a Star Beer and Crolla soft drink before my documents were returned,” Ehindero recounted.
The retired police chief said the incident left him both bitter and reflective, prompting the thought: “Perhaps this officer would not have treated me that way if I were a member of the police force.”
Within the same week, Ehindero noticed a newspaper advertisement inviting applicants to join the Nigeria Police. He applied, passed the interview, and was selected among 25 candidates from roughly 350 applicants for training in 1973.
While at the Police Officers’ Mess in Ikeja, Ehindero said he unexpectedly sighted the same sergeant who had previously detained him. “I wanted to confront him, but he disappeared,” he said.
Sharing the story with his pastor, Ehindero was advised to view the encounter not as a source of resentment but as part of God’s plan.
“My pastor told me to thank the sergeant because God used him to attract me into the police,” he recalled.
Reflecting on his career, Ehindero credited divine guidance for his ascent to the top, noting that when he became Inspector General of Police in 2005, he was the sole surviving member of his original cadet batch.
“It is not by my might but by the amazing grace of God Almighty that I became Inspector General of Police and remain alive today,” Ehindero concluded.
