The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of possible terrorist threats targeting its facilities and affiliated schools across the country.
In an advisory published on Monday, the U.S. Mission in Abuja urged American citizens in Nigeria to heighten vigilance and take precautionary measures around U.S. government premises and institutions linked to the United States.
The mission specifically warned of a potential threat against the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and schools affiliated with the United States.
According to the alert, U.S. citizens were advised to exercise heightened caution when travelling to these locations and to adopt flexible movement patterns to reduce security risks.
The statement read, “The U.S. Mission in Nigeria informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.”
It further recommended that Americans “take additional precautions when travelling to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S.-affiliated schools, including varying travel times and routes.”
The mission also urged citizens to increase their situational awareness, avoid predictable routines and review security precautions with family members.
It added that individuals should “be aware of their surroundings, keep a low profile, review personal security plans, vary regular routes and keep cell phones charged in case of emergency.”
The warning comes amid heightened global tensions following the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The crisis escalated after military hostilities reportedly began on February 28, raising concerns about possible reactions from supporters of Iran in different parts of the world.
In Nigeria, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja has already suspended visa appointments and some consular activities as a precautionary measure.
The suspension followed fears that protests by pro-Iran demonstrators, angered by the reported killing of Iran’s former Supreme Leader during a joint U.S.-Israeli attack, could turn violent.
The U.S. Mission said it would continue to monitor the security situation while urging its citizens in Nigeria to remain alert and adhere strictly to safety advisories.
