At least one Nigerian has been injured following a series of missile and drone attacks launched by Iran on the United Arab Emirates, authorities in the Gulf nation have confirmed.
The UAE Ministry of Defence disclosed on Tuesday that the strikes were part of retaliatory actions by Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, after allegations that the UAE allowed the United States to use its military bases for operations targeting Tehran.
According to the ministry, the attacks, which began on February 28, involved a barrage of ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles directed at the country.
The ministry revealed that its air defence systems detected 262 ballistic missiles launched from Iran during the period. Of the number, 241 were intercepted, 19 fell into the sea, while two struck within UAE territory.
Authorities also reported the detection of 1,475 Iranian drones, noting that 1,385 were intercepted, while 90 landed within the country.
In addition, eight cruise missiles were detected and successfully neutralised by the country’s defence systems.
The strikes have so far resulted in six deaths and 122 injuries, with victims drawn from several nationalities.
According to officials, those killed include citizens of the UAE, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
The injured victims comprise nationals from multiple countries including the UAE, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Yemen, Uganda, Eritrea, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Bahrain, the Comoros, Türkiye, Iraq, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Jordan and Palestine.
The UAE authorities, however, did not disclose the specific number of casualties recorded for each nationality.
Officials said most of the injured persons sustained minor to moderate injuries, as emergency response teams and medical personnel were immediately deployed to affected areas.
The development comes amid growing geopolitical tension in the Middle East, with regional security analysts warning that continued hostilities between Iran and its adversaries could further destabilise the region and threaten civilian safety.
