The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has assured that Nigerian citizens in Iran who wish to leave the country are being safely escorted across the Armenian border, as the ongoing regional tensions intensify.
In a statement posted on X, the commission said the initiative is aimed at ensuring a “smooth and secure passage for those wishing to leave the country.”
It emphasized that no Nigerian has so far been directly affected by the conflict, with government officials stationed at the border to assist all evacuees.
“The Federal Government is vigilant and is effectively responding to the safety and well-being of Nigerians across the world,” the statement added.
NIDCOM noted that the operation is coordinated in collaboration with Armenian authorities, and all officials remain on standby to provide immediate support to citizens as they cross into safety.
Meanwhile, at least one Nigerian has been identified among 122 people injured by Iranian ballistic missile interceptions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE Ministry of Defence did not provide details on the nationalities of the other victims.
The exact number of Nigerians stranded in Iran or other Middle East countries affected by the conflict remains unclear.
However, some citizens in Gulf states have appealed to the federal government to arrange repatriation flights.
Speaking on Tuesday, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of NIDCOM, confirmed that Nigeria would begin evacuating citizens once “the airspace opens,” underscoring the government’s preparedness to act swiftly.
NIDCOM has also shared emergency hotlines for Nigerians in the region seeking immediate assistance, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens abroad.
