Panic gripped parts of Kwara State on Wednesday night as suspected terrorists launched coordinated attacks on villages in Ifelodun and Edu local government areas, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes in search of safety.
Sources within the affected communities said the assailants struck late at night, targeting Budesu and Ahun in Ifelodun and Bishewa in Edu.
Eyewitnesses described the attackers as heavily armed and operating in large numbers, suggesting a planned operation, possibly aimed at abduction.
One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recounted the terrifying ordeal:
“The bandits came at night and started shooting indiscriminately. Everyone ran into the bush. We are still trying to find out who was taken away.”
A youth leader from one of the communities confirmed that families were thrown into confusion as the attackers were still reportedly operating around nearby forests.
He urged the government and security agencies to intervene immediately:
“We appeal to security forces to move quickly before the bandits escape with those they may have kidnapped.”
As of the time of reporting, no official figures were available on casualties or abductions.
Residents, however, expressed growing frustration over the insecurity in rural parts of the state and called for urgent military and police deployment to prevent further attacks.
The latest assault underscores a rising trend of violent raids on communities in Kwara, mirroring similar attacks in northern Nigeria where banditry and terrorism continue to threaten rural populations.
Security agencies are yet to issue a statement on the attacks, but residents remain on high alert as the search for potential victims continues.
