The campaign for increased women’s participation in Nigeria’s political space intensified on Tuesday as the Nigerian League of Women Voters unveiled a fresh demand for the inclusion of 74 additional women in the country’s political framework.
The group took its advocacy to the lawmaker representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Afolabi Afuwape, in a strategic move aimed at securing legislative backing for gender inclusion.
The delegation, in a formal engagement described as constructive, presented a letter detailing its demands, urging deliberate action to address what it termed persistent underrepresentation of women in governance.
The outreach forms part of the organisation’s sustained nationwide engagement with policymakers to galvanise support for inclusive leadership and equitable political representation.
Unlike confrontational advocacy models, the group adopted a dialogue-driven approach, emphasising consultation and democratic engagement in pushing its agenda.
Responding, Afuwape commended the group’s peaceful and structured advocacy, assuring the delegation that their request would receive due consideration.
“I appreciate your approach and the clarity of your demands. I will carefully review the letter and take necessary steps,” the lawmaker said.
The Nigerian League of Women Voters has been at the forefront of campaigns to dismantle structural barriers hindering women’s political participation, while also promoting voter education and protecting female voters from intimidation and discrimination during elections.
Observers say the Abeokuta engagement reflects a growing momentum behind calls for gender inclusion, with increasing signs that the demand is gaining attention within Nigeria’s political decision-making circles.
