The immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has said his decision to resign from office was to safeguard peace and ensure uninterrupted governance in the state amid mounting political tensions.
Gwarzo, who formally stepped down on March 27, 2026, disclosed this in a resignation letter addressed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, describing his exit as voluntary and driven by a sense of responsibility.
“I have taken this step in the spirit of responsibility and statesmanship, to allow the government and the state to move forward without undue distractions,” he said.
The former deputy governor explained that his decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection on the prevailing political situation in Kano State.
He stressed that his resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, but rather as a deliberate effort to preserve institutional integrity and uphold democratic principles.
“This resignation is made voluntarily and should not be construed as an admission of any wrongdoing, but a decision in the interest of public service,” he added.
Gwarzo anchored his decision on Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers public office holders to resign from their positions.
He expressed appreciation to the people of Kano State for the opportunity to serve, and thanked the governor, members of the State Executive Council, the Kano State House of Assembly, the New Nigeria People’s Party, traditional rulers and other stakeholders for their support during his tenure.
His resignation comes against the backdrop of an ongoing impeachment process initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly, following lingering political and legal disputes surrounding his office.
The development is expected to reshape the state’s political landscape, as observers say it may ease tensions within the government while opening a new chapter in the administration’s leadership dynamics.
