Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has intensified consultations with key political figures as he pushes for opposition unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that it is time to restore good governance and national stability.
Atiku, who visited former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in Kano on Wednesday, said the meeting was part of efforts to strengthen the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and reposition it as a viable platform for national recovery.
In a statement shared on his X handle, Atiku described Kwankwaso as a “brother and partner,” noting that their discussions centred on the progress of the party and strategies to deepen its reach across the country.
“I paid a courtesy visit to the residence of my brother and partner… We had quality discussions on the progress of our party, the ADC, and how we must continue the work to ensure good governance and recovery are achieved in good time for the people,” Atiku said.
During the visit, the former vice-president emphasised the need for unity among party stakeholders, stressing that collaboration would be key to addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
“Your Excellency, I have come on behalf of the ADC and its membership… It is therefore time for us to unite and to make sure we restore good governance, development and security for everybody in this country,” he added.
Kwankwaso, who recently dumped the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and formally joined the ADC, welcomed Atiku and pledged his commitment to the party’s vision.
He assured that his political structure would work with the leadership at all levels to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
“I welcome you to my house. I am very much honoured by this visit… We have joined the ADC, and I’m happy to say that my humble self and my group are team players and are ready to work together with all the members and all the leaders of the party,” Kwankwaso said.
He expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, adding that sustained unity within the ADC could translate into electoral victory across the country.
“I can comfortably say so far so good; we have been working together… and we will continue to work with all of you so that… the ADC can win not only in north-western Nigeria but in the entire country,” he said.
Kwankwaso’s alignment with the ADC comes just days after he officially registered with the party in Kano, a move that has triggered political realignments within opposition circles.
The development is seen as part of wider efforts to consolidate forces ahead of 2027, as prominent politicians, including former Senate President David Mark, former governors, and other key figures, also align with the party..
