A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo, on Saturday led a large mobilisation of supporters to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the commissioning of the Gateway International Cargo Airport in Ogun State, describing the project as a catalyst for economic growth and export expansion.
The high-profile event, held in Abeokuta, drew dignitaries from across the country and showcased what observers described as Lemo’s growing grassroots influence and political alignment with the President ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the event, Lemo commended Tinubu for supporting the completion of the cargo airport, noting that the facility would significantly enhance trade, logistics and industrial development in the state.
He said, “This is a remarkable achievement, not just because we now have an airport, but because it will drive exportation of agricultural products, boost foreign earnings and strengthen the economy.”
Lemo added that the project would open up new opportunities for businesses and position Ogun as a strategic investment hub, capable of competing among top revenue-generating states in the country within the next few years.
He also lauded Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he described as visionary leadership in delivering critical infrastructure, while acknowledging the contributions of previous administrations in laying the foundation for the project.
“Governor Abiodun deserves commendation for his commitment to legacy projects. We must equally recognise past leaders whose efforts made this achievement possible,” he said.
Reaffirming his support for Tinubu’s administration, Lemo described the President’s reform agenda as bold but necessary for long-term national development.
According to him, “The ongoing reforms require courage and consistency. I remain fully supportive of policies aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and prosperity.”
Political analysts said Lemo’s mobilisation effort and visible presence at the event underscored his emergence as a key stakeholder within the ruling party in Ogun State, with possible implications for future political contests.
He, however, thanked residents and supporters for maintaining order during the President’s visit, describing their conduct as a reflection of the state’s peaceful disposition.
The Gateway International Cargo Airport is expected to boost agro-exports, improve supply chains and strengthen Ogun’s position within Nigeria’s industrial corridor.
