A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President, David Mark, on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with a rival bloc of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headed by Kabiru Turaki in Abuja, amid intensifying crises within both opposition parties.
The closed-door talks, according to findings by PLATFORM TIMES, are part of ongoing efforts to forge a broad opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Prominent political heavyweights attended the meeting, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
Also present was the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signalling a possible convergence of key opposition figures across party lines.
On the PDP side, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu, ex-Information Minister Jerry Gana, and former Senate President Adolphus Wabara were in attendance.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of deepening internal wrangling in both parties.
The ADC has been embroiled in a protracted leadership crisis since July 2025, when a coalition of opposition figures assumed control of the party’s structure.
The development has been fiercely contested by a rival faction led by Nafiu Bala, who insists that Mark’s emergence as national chairman was незакон.
The situation worsened recently after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition of the Mark-led leadership, citing a subsisting court judgment and ongoing litigation.
INEC had also announced that it would steer clear of activities organised by both factions pending the resolution of the legal tussle at the Federal High Court.
In a further twist, the ADC State Chairmen Forum earlier this week rejected both factions and announced an interim leadership to manage the party’s affairs until a national convention is held.
Similarly, the PDP remains sharply divided between factions loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and those aligned with Turaki.
While the Wike-backed camp recently conducted a parallel convention that produced new national officers, the Turaki-led faction has approached the Supreme Court seeking to halt the exercise and assert its legitimacy.
Analysts say the latest engagement between the ADC and PDP factions may signal early realignments aimed at consolidating opposition forces to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
Although details of the Abuja meeting were not made public, insiders hinted that discussions centred on building a unified front, harmonising structures, and resolving leadership disputes that have weakened opposition influence nationwide.
The outcome of the talks, observers note, could shape the configuration of Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
