The senatorial ambition of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, may be facing a major setback as a pending court case challenging his academic credentials gathers momentum, with opposition parties and civil society actors escalating the legal battle.
Findings by PLATFORM TIMES revealed that the governor has yet to respond to the allegations contained in the suit filed before the Federal High Court, Lagos Division, raising concerns over the potential implications for his reported bid for the Ogun East Senatorial District.
The case, instituted by the Human Global Resource Initiative and two other plaintiffs, is marked FHC/L/CS/291/2026 and lists the Independent National Electoral Commission as the first respondent, alongside Abiodun and seven others.
Through their counsel, Yemi Oke (SAN), the plaintiffs have urged INEC to refrain from recognising Abiodun as a candidate in any future electoral process pending the determination of the suit.
Among the reliefs sought is an order of perpetual injunction restraining the electoral body from accepting or recognising the governor as a candidate of any political party.
The matter, which came up before C. J. Aneke on March 17, 2026, has been adjourned till July 9, 2026, for definite hearing.
Further checks by PLATFORM TIMES showed that opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress and the Labour Party, have joined the suit, a development that has heightened the stakes in the legal tussle.
It was also gathered that the All Progressives Congress, under which Abiodun currently serves as governor, has been served with court processes, while the Department of State Services was copied in the legal notice.
In a legal caveat addressed to INEC, the plaintiffs argued that the issues raised in the suit are sub judice and warned the commission against taking any action that could prejudice the court’s decision.
They maintained that recognising Abiodun as a candidate while the case is pending would amount to “foisting a fait accompli” on the court.
Despite the weight of the allegations and the widening scope of the suit, the governor has reportedly remained silent, with no response filed before the court as of the time of filing this report.
The development has triggered political tension in Ogun State, with analysts warning that the outcome of the case could significantly shape Abiodun’s political future, particularly his rumoured senatorial ambition.
Efforts to get official reactions from the governor’s media aides were unsuccessful, as messages sent to them were not responded to as of press time.
