Parents of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls have renewed calls for urgent and coordinated action to secure the release of the 87 girls still in captivity, 12 years after their abduction by insurgents in Borno State.
In an open letter issued on Monday to mark the anniversary of the April 14, 2014 incident, the parents appealed to the Federal Government, the United Nations, and the international community not to relent in efforts to bring back the remaining victims.
The statement, signed by Yana Galang and Zanna Lawan on behalf of the parents, described the continued absence of the girls as a painful reminder of promises yet to be fulfilled.
The abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, had sparked global outrage and triggered widespread advocacy for the protection of girls’ education, symbolised by the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.
Although dozens of the girls have been rescued or released over the years, the parents lamented that the crisis remains unresolved, stressing that 87 of their daughters are still unaccounted for.
“For the families, this is not a past tragedy but an ongoing reality,” the statement read. “The passage of time has not diminished the uncertainty and anguish faced by those still waiting for answers.”
They urged the Nigerian government to intensify search operations and ensure accountability, while also calling on the United Nations and international partners to sustain global attention on the plight of the missing girls.
“This is not only a national issue but a test of global resolve. The responsibility to act does not diminish with time,” the parents said.
They further demanded transparent and coordinated efforts, including strengthened security measures to protect children, particularly girls, in conflict-affected communities.
The parents warned against allowing the Chibok abduction to fade from global consciousness, insisting that the girls must not become “a symbol without consequence.”
They added that the crisis would only be resolved when all the missing girls are safely returned and accounted for.
