The media team of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has dismissed as “baseless and misleading” allegations circulating in a viral video linking the revered monarch to terrorism, warning an American commentator, Mac Arnold, to desist from spreading unverified claims.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Sultan’s media office, the palace said it had observed with restraint a series of “sensational and unsubstantiated” commentaries attributed to Arnold, which it said were designed to attract public attention and stir controversy.
The statement noted that the claims, particularly those alleging any form of complicity in violence or terrorism, lacked credible evidence and had previously been raised and dismissed in public discourse.
It stressed that the Sultan, who is the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, remained a respected religious and national leader committed to peace, interfaith harmony, and national unity.
“The allegations are false, misleading, and unsupported by any credible proof. Similar narratives have been widely challenged and rejected as divisive and capable of inflaming tensions,” the statement read.
The media team added that it would not be drawn into further engagement on the issue but urged members of the public and the international community to verify information from reliable sources before amplifying such content.
It also warned that any material considered defamatory or capable of inciting discord would be subjected to legal scrutiny in line with applicable laws.
Reaffirming the Sultanate’s commitment to peace and unity, the statement said the institution would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to promote justice and national cohesion.
