The Central Bank of Nigeria has warned Nigerians to be vigilant following a surge in cyber hack attempts aimed at gaining access to personal and financial information.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, the apex bank disclosed that fraudsters are circulating fake messages and emails falsely claiming to originate from the bank.
The CBN said the misleading communications are designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public into clicking malicious links or divulging sensitive information.
According to the bank, the fraudulent messages often contain false claims about its leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions, with the ultimate aim of compromising users’ personal accounts.
“The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria remains www.cbn.gov.ng�. Members of the public are strongly advised to refrain from clicking links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites,” the statement read.
The apex bank urged Nigerians to verify all its communications through official channels and credible media platforms, while also advising the public to report suspicious emails, websites, or messages to law enforcement agencies.
Reassuring stakeholders, the CBN said it remains committed to safeguarding the country’s financial system, noting that it is strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies.
The warning comes days after the Corporate Affairs Commission confirmed a cyber attack on its information systems, raising fresh concerns about growing digital threats in the country.

Commission recently launched an investigation into an alleged data breach involving Remita Payment Services Limited and Sterling Bank, among others.
The latest development underscores increasing vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, as authorities intensify efforts to curb cybercrime and protect users.
