The Nigeria Revenue Service has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles with large engine capacities.
The agency, in a statement issued on Sunday, described the circulating message as “misleading” and clarified that no such policy exists.
The viral claim, widely shared on social media, had alleged that a 2–4 per cent surcharge would be imposed on imported vehicles with engine capacities above 2,000cc from July 1, 2026. It also suggested that the purported policy was part of broader fiscal reforms aimed at promoting cleaner transport, with exemptions for smaller vehicles, electric cars, mass transit buses and locally assembled automobiles.
However, the NRS refuted the claims, stressing that the information did not originate from the government or any of its agencies.
The agency’s spokesperson, Dare Adekanmbi, said the message—circulated in the form of an official-looking infographic—was fabricated to mislead the public.
“The Federal Government has not introduced any fresh tax on vehicles as claimed in the material,” Adekanmbi stated.
He warned Nigerians against acting on unverified information, noting that the fake notice also directed vehicle owners to make payments through online platforms and designated banks.
According to him, such directives are not recognised by the Service.
“The information did not emanate from the Service or any government agency. Citizens are advised to disregard the fabricated message,” he added.
The NRS urged the public to rely solely on verified and official communication channels for updates on tax policies and fiscal regulations, reiterating its commitment to transparency in revenue administration.
The agency also cautioned that the use of official symbols in the viral message was a deliberate attempt to confer false legitimacy on the claim.
