The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Ajibola Basiru, has warned former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, to desist from making remarks capable of undermining the ruling party, threatening disciplinary action if he fails to comply.
Basiru issued the warning following Fayemi’s recent criticism of the APC, where he alleged that the party had deviated from its founding ideals and was gradually losing its ideological direction.
Fayemi, who spoke during a television interview, lamented what he described as the erosion of internal democracy within the party, warning that the growing culture of consensus arrangements and political endorsements could trigger internal crises ahead of future elections.
He said, “This is not where the party has come from. We have lost our bearing and the vision of the founding fathers of this party.”
The former governor also cautioned against what he termed an unhealthy rush by party members to seek political patronage from the Presidency, warning that such tendencies could destabilise the party.
“It would be unfortunate if everybody is running to Aso Rock because they want something. Those who don’t get consensus won’t be happy, and you’re waiting for an implosion,” Fayemi added.
Reacting, Basiru dismissed the concerns and challenged Fayemi to leave the party if he no longer believes in its vision.
He said, “If he so much despises the party and wishes it an implosion, he should go to where his ideas can be ventilated. He should not remain in the party and be wishing us bad luck.”
The APC scribe further warned that the party would not hesitate to invoke disciplinary measures against Fayemi over what he described as anti-party activities.
“Let him go and join another party. If he refuses, the APC will not hesitate to sanction him,” Basiru said.
Basiru also linked Fayemi’s comments to alleged political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, claiming the former governor had been fraternising with opposition figures.
According to him, Fayemi’s stance corroborates earlier claims by former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, that some APC members were working towards forming an opposition coalition.
He added that Fayemi’s comments, coming at a time the party is preparing for the Ekiti State governorship election, could weaken the APC’s chances at the polls.
“Making such statements when the party is conducting primaries and preparing for a crucial governorship election only suggests an attempt to demarket the APC,” Basiru said.
The development signals growing internal tensions within the ruling party as political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections begin to take shape.
