A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Alhaji Fasiu Ajadi, has dismissed claims that the party is unsettled by recent defections, insisting that the ruling party remains firmly on course ahead of the 2027 governorship election
Ajadi, who is a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly Service Commission, said the APC was not in any panic mode despite the movement of some of its members to opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party.
Speaking on a radio programme, Political Forum, on Splash FM in Abeokuta, Ajadi described the defections as a normal occurrence in the build-up to elections, adding that they would not weaken the APC’s chances in the state.
He further predicted that the PDP might not even feature on the ballot in the 2027 governorship poll in Ogun State, though he did not provide details to support the claim.
His comments come amid the recent defection of former senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, from the APC to the PDP, where she is reportedly seeking the senatorial ticket for Ogun Central. Also, a former Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lanre Sowunmi, recently joined the PDP.
Ajadi downplayed the impact of the defections, insisting they posed no threat to the APC’s ambition to retain power in 2027.
He criticised Obasanjo’s political move, attributing it to what he described as an “entitlement mentality.” According to him, it was unrealistic for her to seek the APC governorship ticket shortly after rejoining the party.
He said, “It is unreasonable to expect to reap where one did not sow. Having just returned and joined the APC, aspiring to clinch the governorship ticket was not appropriate.”
Ajadi added that her return to the PDP would provide her the opportunity to test her political relevance in the forthcoming senatorial contest.
On Sowunmi’s defection, Ajadi said the development did not come as a surprise to the APC, alleging that the former aide had maintained close ties with PDP leaders, including Obasanjo and loyalists of a faction of the Egba Lokan Agenda.
He also took a swipe at leaders of the Egba Lokan Agenda for backing the PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, describing their position as contradictory.
According to him, it was illogical for a group advocating an Egba governorship to support a candidate from Ogun East instead of the APC’s presumed candidate, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, whom he described as an Egba indigene.
Ajadi reiterated that the APC remains united and strategically positioned to dominate the 2027 elections in Ogun State, regardless of recent political realignments.
