The Organisation for Harmony and Peace has expressed concern over emerging political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State, warning that issues of equity and inclusiveness must not be overlooked.
The group, through its Directorate of Political Affairs, noted that recent developments within major political parties indicate the possible emergence of two prominent Muslim women as deputy governorship candidates, a trend it said has sparked renewed debate over fairness in the state’s political structure.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its President-General, Ustaadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao, and made available to journalists by its Director of Media, Ambassador Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, the organisation said the situation had drawn significant public attention.
The statement identified Alhaja Dr Lateefat Oyeyemi Sowunmi Kolapo, reportedly linked with the Peoples Democratic Party, and Mrs Kudirat Abiodun Adegunwa-Balogun of the All Progressives Congress as the two figures at the centre of the unfolding political permutations.
According to the group, both women are respected for their experience, scholarship and contributions to society, describing their emergence as a reflection of growing political inclusion.
It, however, stressed that the development should not overshadow the broader need for balanced representation across religious and socio-political divides.
The statement read in part, “While we acknowledge the evolving nature of political participation, the central issue remains equity, fairness and long-term inclusiveness in Ogun State’s leadership structure.
“Sustainable peace and unity can only be achieved when all segments of society are fairly represented.”
The organisation called on political parties and stakeholders to ensure that their decisions reflect justice, transparency and the aspirations of the people.
It also urged parties yet to conclude their zoning and candidate selection processes to prioritise balanced representation.
OHP further advised residents to remain actively engaged in the political process, noting that more developments were likely as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
