President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as a high-performing public official who drew inspiration from his style of governance.
Akpabio made the remarks during the inauguration of access roads leading to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in Karsana West District, Abuja, one of the projects commissioned to commemorate President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.
Representing President Tinubu at the event, the Senate President said Wike had developed a reputation for delivering infrastructure projects wherever he served, adding that hard work had become part of the minister’s character.
Recalling an earlier encounter during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio said Wike, who was then a minister, toured infrastructure projects in the state and expressed admiration for their quality.
He claimed the visit inspired Wike to pursue a similar approach to governance if given the opportunity to lead a state.
According to Akpabio, Wike had inspected the state’s underground drainage system and was impressed by the scale and quality of the work.
“He said if I ever had the opportunity to be in Rivers State, I would perform miracles. God gave you that opportunity and you performed excellently well,” Akpabio said.
In a light-hearted remark that drew laughter from guests, the Senate President said he later jokingly advised Wike not to outperform him after becoming governor of Rivers State.
“I even pleaded with you to become governor and not surpass what I did. Take it easy. If Jesus Christ had done all the work for God, there would be no need for the Pope. Another governor would come, so don’t do everything because you saw me working so hard,” he said.
Akpabio added that Wike’s commitment to executing projects had become part of his identity.
“But now it has become your DNA. Wherever you go, you show your hand, and God will bless you,” he added.
The commissioning of the Karsana West access roads forms part of a series of infrastructure projects being unveiled by the Federal Government in the FCT as part of activities marking President Tinubu’s third year in office.
