…Each bride gets ₦200,000, household items

The Kano State Government has approved ₦300 million for the payment of dowries and business start-up grants for 1,500 brides participating in the 2026 state-sponsored mass wedding programme.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the intervention as activities for the annual mass wedding commenced on Thursday with a one-day orientation programme for intending couples at the Coronation Hall in Kano.
Represented by the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, the governor urged the prospective couples to build their marriages on trust, patience, mutual respect and the fear of Allah.
He described marriage as a sacred institution founded on responsibility, compassion and mutual understanding, stressing that enduring families remain the bedrock of a peaceful and prosperous society.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf advised the intending couples to remain faithful to one another, exercise patience during difficult times and resolve disagreements through dialogue rather than conflict.
He also emphasised that the stability of every family depends on both spouses fulfilling their respective rights and responsibilities.
As part of the government’s support package, each bride will receive ₦200,000 to cover her dowry and provide start-up capital for a small business.
The state government said the total cash support for the 1,500 beneficiaries amounts to ₦300 million.
Beyond the financial assistance, each bride will also receive household items, including a bed, mattress, wardrobe, dressing mirror, blankets, bed sheets and a centre rug.
Similarly, each groom will receive 10 yards of Guinea brocade, a cap, a bag of rice and a jerrycan of cooking oil to support the newlyweds as they begin married life.
The orientation programme featured lectures by Islamic scholars and professionals on family life, marital responsibilities, conflict resolution, health and legal issues relating to marriage.
Among the speakers were Sheikh Ali Aliyu Abubakar, who spoke on The Wisdom of Marriage in Islam; Professor Ibrahim Mu’azzam Mai Bushira, who addressed The Rights and Responsibilities of Spouses in Islam; and Sheikh Muhammad Nur Arzai, who discussed the causes of marital conflicts and ways of resolving them in line with Islamic teachings.
Other resource persons included Barrister Habibu Dan Almajiri, Sheikh Ibrahim Shehi Shehi Mai Hula, Dr. Zahara’u Muhammad Umar and Dr. Khadija Sagir Suleiman.
The state government said activities for the 2026 mass wedding programme would continue until Sunday.
Marriage solemnisation ceremonies are scheduled for Friday at the Central Jumu’ah Mosque in Kano metropolis and simultaneously across the headquarters of the state’s 44 local government areas.
The programme will culminate in a grand wedding reception at the Government House Open Arena and the distribution of household furniture and other support items to the newly married couples.
