The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress on Monday held a crucial meeting in Abuja to review preparations for the 2027 general elections and determine the party’s position on the outcome of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.
The meeting, which lasted from 4pm to 6:20pm at the APC National Secretariat, came less than 48 hours after the Osun poll, which has generated political tensions and reactions from various stakeholders.
The NWC also deliberated on the composition of the party’s 2027 Presidential National Campaign Council as the Independent National Electoral Commission prepares to lift the ban on campaign activities for next year’s elections.
The meeting was presided over by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and was the first gathering of the NWC at the party’s national secretariat since the conclusion of the sale of expression-of-interest and nomination forms for the 2027 elections.
A source familiar with the meeting said the session was heated, with some NWC members allegedly expressing dissatisfaction over what they described as their exclusion from important party activities by the national chairman and the National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru.
The aggrieved members were also said to have questioned the alleged relocation of some official party meetings from the national secretariat to private venues, arguing that such a development was inconsistent with the established practice of conducting party business at the secretariat.
The source further disclosed that some members linked the APC’s performance in the Osun election to what they described as poor coordination and alleged failure to allow members of the National Campaign Council to effectively perform their statutory responsibilities.
However, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, confirmed that the NWC considered a number of issues affecting the party, including preparations for the commencement of campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
Morka said the APC could commence its campaign once INEC’s timetable permitted it, stressing that the party would not violate the electoral body’s regulations.
“What we deliberated upon are issues concerning the party, including the forthcoming flagging-off of campaigns by INEC.
“The party is at liberty to kick off its campaign any time, provided we didn’t jump the gun by starting earlier than the stipulated date by INEC,” Morka said.
On the contentious Osun governorship election, the APC spokesman said the party would formally communicate its position on the poll on Tuesday.
“Concerning Osun election, I will be issuing a statement to state the position of our great party on Tuesday,” he added.
The development comes amid heightened political activity within the APC following the Osun governorship election and increasing preparations by political parties for the 2027 general elections.
The ruling party’s expected statement on the Osun poll is likely to provide clarity on its assessment of the election and its next political and legal steps.
The APC’s internal review of its campaign structure also assumes significance as the party begins preparations to defend its position at the national level in 2027 and consolidate its political structures ahead of the general elections.
