The lawmaker representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Afolabi Moruf Afuape, popularly known as Afoo, has explained that his decision to prioritise education in his constituency is rooted in his conviction that education remains the foundation for individual advancement and national development.
Afuape said education was largely responsible for his emergence and achievements, stressing that he had been supporting education-related initiatives even before venturing into politics.
The lawmaker spoke on Wednesday while inspecting beneficiaries of his 2026 free summer coaching programme at St. Peter Primary School, Ake, Abeokuta.
The programme, organised under the Afolabi Moruf Afuape Education Support Initiative for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, is being held at St. Peter Primary School, Ake, and Nawairudeen High School, Isabo.
Students from Egba High School, Faith Heritage, Al-Hudah Model College and other schools are participating in the programme, which provides lessons in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Physics and Government.
Explaining why education had become a major focus of his constituency interventions, Afuape said, “It’s not about the administration. I’ve been doing this before I even went to lecture. Education is the key to everything that we have in life.
“Education brought me to where I am today. Without education, I don’t think anything can be achieved.
“So, I think in all ways, it’s the first thing that I must do. If we get our class system right, everything in Nigeria will be perfect. That is why I decided to be doing this.”
Afuape urged the students to remain committed to their studies, telling them that academic excellence could open doors to greater opportunities.
“Education brought me to where I am today, and I believe that if you take it seriously, the sky is just a starting point,” he said.
The lawmaker also announced that students who emerged first, second and third in their recently concluded examinations would receive prizes as part of efforts to encourage healthy academic competition and excellence.
He further pledged to support SS3 students who successfully pass their O’Level and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examinations.
Afuape urged the students to submit their results to his constituency office after the examinations to enable his office to follow up and determine areas where further assistance could be provided.
The lawmaker said his education intervention was not limited to the summer coaching programme, listing infrastructure and technology projects executed in schools across the constituency.
He said a computer system had been provided at St. Peter Primary School, while classroom blocks had been constructed in different schools and communities.
“In this same school, I have given them a computer system. I have built four different classrooms. We have one in Kuto, St. John’s High School. We have one at Ogbe. We have one at Bangba. We have done those things,” he said.
Afuape said the interventions were aimed at improving the learning environment and giving students in Abeokuta South access to facilities that could enhance their academic performance.
He also promised that his education-focused interventions would continue, saying there were further plans to strengthen the sector in the constituency.
“We must continue to put our best. We have plans, we have what we want to do, and we are not shying away from it,” he said.
“Whatever I can do to make our government system better, we continue to do.”
During the visit, Afuape went beyond inspecting the programme and joined the students in the classroom.
He taught Economics, explaining the concepts of “firm” and “industry” and discussing factors that determine their operations.
The students participated in the lesson by answering questions and sharing their understanding of the subject.
The engagement underscored the lawmaker’s stated emphasis on combining educational infrastructure with direct academic support for students.
With political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gaining momentum, Afuape was also asked to identify some of his achievements that could convince constituents to support his return to the National Assembly.
Rather than pointing only to legislative activities, he highlighted his interventions in schools, including classroom construction and provision of computer facilities.
He said the projects represented some of his contributions to the development of Abeokuta South.
Afuape’s education agenda, therefore, combines academic support through free coaching and examination incentives with infrastructure interventions intended to improve the physical learning environment.
He maintained that the ultimate objective was to produce better-educated young people and, by extension, contribute to a better society.
