The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 22 persons suspected of engaging in cross-dressing, hook-up activities and drug abuse in different parts of the state.
The Deputy Commander General of the board, Dr Mujahid Aminuddeen, disclosed this on Saturday, saying the suspects were apprehended following complaints from residents and surveillance by Hisbah operatives.
According to him, the suspects comprised 12 men and 10 women and were arrested around Zoo Road, Court Road and other neighbouring areas in Kano.
Aminuddeen alleged that most of the suspects had entered Kano from other states, adding that those arrested admitted during questioning to involvement in hook-up activities and drug abuse.
He said investigations were ongoing and that suspects found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Hisbah official said the board would intensify its operations against activities it considers immoral, stressing that such practices would not be tolerated in the state.
He said, “We received complaints from residents and commenced surveillance in the affected areas before making the arrests.”
Aminuddeen added that the operation was part of the board’s broader efforts to address alleged moral violations and activities considered contrary to the state’s Islamic legal framework.
The latest arrests come months after the Hisbah Board conducted a raid on a hotel in Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state, where several people, including teenagers, were reportedly arrested.
The earlier operation was carried out at Stephrica Guest Palace in the Kureken Sani area following intelligence reportedly received from residents about activities at the facility.
The hotel manager was also arrested during the operation as the authorities sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the activities at the premises.
The Kano State Hisbah Board is a government-backed Islamic moral enforcement body charged with promoting adherence to Shari’a principles and addressing activities considered contrary to Islamic moral standards.
Its operations have, however, continued to attract public attention and debate, particularly over enforcement methods and the treatment of people accused of violating moral codes.
Meanwhile, the Hisbah board said the current investigation would determine the next steps against the 22 suspects.
