The Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party Deputy Governorship Candidate, Hajia (Dr.) ’Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, has challenged opposition politicians to brace for defeat in the 2027 elections, declaring that the PDP is confident of sweeping the polls.
Kolapo, however, assured opposition members that they would not be victimised or abandoned if the PDP emerged victorious, saying politics should not destroy the bonds among the people of Ogun State.
She spoke while addressing more than 1,000 PDP members during the party’s Ijemo Zone meeting in Ward 5, Abeokuta South, where party leaders and stakeholders from across the constituency rallied support for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The deputy governorship candidate urged Ogun residents to vote for all PDP candidates, from the National Assembly to the State House of Assembly, saying the party was poised for victory at all levels.
Kolapo said opposition politicians were justified in being apprehensive about the outcome of the election, insisting that the political consciousness of Ogun residents had evolved beyond what she described as the pursuit of personal interests at the expense of the people.
She said, “We want to assure our brothers and sisters in the opposition, who know the truth but are running helter-skelter to protect their ‘soup pots’, that they will still be able to eat after we must have thrashed them at the polls.
“We will not allow politics to break the bond between the true sons and daughters of Ogun State. We know that when the chips are down, the strangers that they are selling now because of their pockets will abandon them, but we will never do so. So, they’ll come round.”
Kolapo, who is the Iya Sunnah of Egbaland and Ameerah of Ogun State, also said her acceptance among the people of Egbaland and the state was not a product of her recent political involvement.
She maintained that the welfare of the people had remained central to her activities long before she joined partisan politics.
Speaking at the meeting, the PDP Deputy State Chairman, Hon. Biodun Ogunremi, called on party members to intensify their door-to-door mobilisation campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ogunremi said the party should consolidate its grassroots support and increase its winning margin by reaching more residents across communities.
“The masses are tired of pain and they are with us. In the Central, we have the Deputy Governor and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo. That is what is giving them headache.
“Many stakeholders know that the wellbeing of Ogun indigenes is the priority of the PDP. That is why they are with us,” he said.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the PDP Campaign Council in Ogun State, High Chief Mustapha Owolabi, described the 2027 election as a “done deal,” expressing confidence that voters in Ogun Central and other parts of the state would support the party.
He said the electorate was aware of the prevailing political realities and would not “settle for less” in the 2027 elections.
The meeting ended with a show of solidarity from residents and PDP members in Ijemo, as party leaders sought to strengthen the organisation’s grassroots structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
