More than 1,500 residents of Abeokuta South Federal Constituency have benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afolabi Moruf Afuape.
The two-day outreach, held at the Skating Ground, Panseke, and the Centenary Hall, Ake, Abeokuta, provided residents with access to medical consultations, screenings, diagnostic tests and treatment at no cost.
The programme also featured special eye examinations as part of efforts to improve access to preventive and primary healthcare among constituents.
The large turnout on the first and second days reflected what organisers described as the growing need for accessible healthcare services within the constituency, particularly for residents who may find it difficult to afford routine medical checks and treatment.
Afuape, popularly known as AFOO, also used the occasion to extend support to vulnerable constituents, presenting a wheelchair to a constituent in need.
The intervention, according to the organisers, was aimed at improving the beneficiary’s mobility and restoring a measure of independence and dignity.
A medical concern was also detected during the screening when a constituent was found to have high blood pressure.
The individual was subsequently referred to the General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, for further medical evaluation and appropriate management.
The development underscored the importance of the outreach beyond the provision of immediate treatment, as the early detection of health conditions can facilitate timely medical intervention.
The organisers said the turnout and positive response from residents demonstrated the importance of taking healthcare services closer to the people.
The free medical programme is expected to continue and end at Itoko Township Hall, the hometown of Afuape.
The outreach is part of Afuape’s constituency interventions aimed at addressing some of the immediate needs of residents of Abeokuta South Federal Constituency.
