The All Progressives Congress councillor representing Ward 13, Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, Hon. Ibrahim Jasul, has strengthened his education-focused grassroots intervention with the donation of school lockers, 15 sets of workbooks, 500 exercise books and assorted writing materials to pupils in his ward.
The educational support programme, held at Igbore Town Hall, Abeokuta, attracted pupils and their parents, as well as APC leaders and stakeholders in Ward 13.
Among those who graced the event were a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Wilfred Allen-Taylor, and the APC Chairman of Ward 13, Olanrewaju Shakirudeen, among others.
The initiative, according to Jasul, was designed to provide immediate educational support to families and reduce the financial burden associated with preparing children for a new academic session.
The councillor donated 500 exercise books, alongside pens, pencils, sharpeners and erasers, while 15 sets of school workbooks and lockers were also provided as part of the intervention.
Speaking with journalists after presenting the materials to the beneficiaries, Jasul said he considered the intervention a modest way of using his position to make a meaningful difference in the lives of constituents.
“It is my pleasure today to come back to the field that I represent in this ward. I am here today to donate 15 sets of school workbooks for children who are going to resume for the new academic session,” he said.
Jasul added:“I have also prepared 500 pieces of exercise books, as well as writing pens, sharpeners, erasers and pencils.”
Explaining the motivation behind the gesture, the councillor said the current economic situation had made it necessary for public representatives to support families in practical ways.
“I just want to do this within our own context so that the parents can be relieved of the burden of spending too much money on their children’s education,” he said.
He added:“The country is not easy at this time. Therefore, I just have to think about where I can use my opportunity to make sure that I touch the lives of these people.”
According to him, the intervention was ultimately aimed at ensuring that children were not held back by the financial difficulties confronting their families.
“This is to make sure that their children go back to school,” Jasul said.‘Education can secure their future’
Jasul said his emphasis on education was informed by both his legislative responsibilities and his conviction that education remained a critical pathway to a better future for young people.
He disclosed that he serves as Chairman of the Committee on Education in the legislature, adding that his personal family experience had further strengthened his commitment to education.
“I do so because I am the Chairman of the Committee on Education in the chamber, in my legislature. I also have four graduates, and all my children are doing well,” he said.
The councillor said supporting children’s education could also help steer them away from negative influences and undesirable activities.
“The reason why I am so much in love with education is that you can see the people in our environment today,” he said.
“If you don’t take care of your child very well, they may become the kind of children you see going about engaging in undesirable activities.”
He therefore urged parents and community stakeholders to continue investing in the education of their children.
“We should support people in getting an education so that they can have a better future for themselves,” Jasul said.
The councillor urged the pupils who benefited from the programme to reciprocate the gesture by taking their studies seriously and avoiding negative peer influence.
“I would just advise them to make sure that they face their studies diligently, not to copy the bad behaviour of people in the town,” he said.
Jasul encouraged the pupils to aspire to become responsible and successful members of society.
“They should always look forward to becoming someone like me in society,” he said.
He also urged the beneficiaries to remember the sacrifices made by their parents to keep them in school.
“They should come back to the community to appreciate their parents for the sacrifices they made and the money they spent to send them to school,” he added.
Beyond the education intervention, Jasul used the occasion to appeal to residents and APC supporters in the ward to support the party in forthcoming elections.
The councillor said he believed the APC had a role to play in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and urged supporters to remain committed to the party.
“We are APC members. We are all members of the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
He called on parents whose children benefited from the programme and other residents to vote for the APC.
“My advice to the parents whose children have benefited from this programme is to make sure that they go out en masse to vote for the party, the All Progressives Congress,” Jasul said.
Jasul also endorsed Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, urging residents of Ogun State to support him.
“I am pleading with the people of the state. I am pleading with the people in my ward. I am pleading with people all over the state to help us vote for Adeola Yayi,” he said.
He described Adeola as an experienced legislator who, according to him, had impacted communities through various projects and interventions.
“He has the experience to do this. He has been a legislator. He has been touching the lives of the people,” Jasul said.
He added:“There are many projects he has executed in the town and across the state, and people have felt his impact. They have felt his efforts.”
Jasul argued that the experience already acquired by Adeola placed him in a position to do more for the people if given greater responsibility.
“Even if we assume that he has not yet got to the position he is seeking, he has done what people are expecting of him,” he said.
“Don’t you think that he can still do more for the masses?”
