Former Vice-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Prof. Afolabi Soyode, has described the Peoples Democratic Party’s Deputy Governorship Candidate in Ogun State, Hajia Lateefat ‘Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, as a woman of integrity and strong principles.
Soyode, who is the Life President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Abeokuta Club, spoke when Kolapo paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Abeokuta as part of consultations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The former university don said although he last had a one-on-one interaction with Kolapo more than two decades ago, he had retained fond memories of her professionalism, objectivity and integrity.
Recalling their previous encounter, Soyode said, “It was about 20 years ago that we saw last. I finished my tenure as VC at Ago-Iwoye, April 2006. Even with the passage of time, I remember Alhaja with admiration, with appreciation.
“She was one editor that was very supportive, very objective, and with integrity.”
Kolapo, who was accompanied by her political associates during the visit, sought Soyode’s prayers and support for the PDP governorship ticket led by its governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu.
She described Soyode as one of the respected elder statesmen of Egbaland whose contributions and reputation had continued to inspire younger generations.
“I’ve always known you, our father, to be a man of integrity. We, the younger ones, look up to you.
“That was why when I was told about your book launch and birthday celebration, I said I had to be part of it. Your support and prayers today mean a lot to me,” she said.
Kolapo’s visit formed part of her ongoing consultations with traditional, political, professional and community stakeholders across Ogun State ahead of the 2027 election.
Responding to her appeal, Soyode prayed for the success of the PDP governorship ticket, stressing that stakeholders in the state had a responsibility to take an interest in the quality of leadership that emerged in 2027.
He said as a stakeholder in Ogun State, he was interested in who would govern the state and expressed his support through prayers for the PDP ticket.
