Prominent Nigerian cleric, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has called on President Bola Tinubu to cancel the planned October 1 Independence Day parade, warning that proceeding with the event could expose the country to danger.
Ayodele made the call in a video shared on X on Monday, ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
The cleric specifically appealed to the President to reconsider the planned parade, saying he had foreseen danger if the event went ahead.
He said, “October 1st, President Tinubu should cancel the parade. If he attempts to go ahead with it, there is danger in it.”
Ayodele did not provide specific details or evidence to substantiate the nature or source of the danger he warned about in the video.
The cleric’s warning comes as Nigerians prepare to commemorate the country’s 66th Independence anniversary on October 1, with official activities expected to mark the occasion.
Beyond the Independence Day celebration, Ayodele also turned his attention to the 2027 general elections, urging Nigerians not to allow politicians to influence their voting decisions through gifts or other inducements.
He advised voters to reject any material benefits offered by politicians in exchange for electoral support and instead make their choices based on their conscience and assessment of candidates.
He said, “And to Nigerians, don’t collect anything from any politician because of the election. Vote your conscience. Vote for the right people. Vote for people who will truly serve the interest of the people.”
The cleric further urged Nigerians to remain prayerful and vigilant as the country prepares to mark another anniversary of its independence.
