A helicopter has crashed in a swampy area around Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, with several occupants feared dead.
The incident occurred on Monday morning, October 5, 2026, throwing residents of the coastal community into confusion as the aircraft reportedly went down in a difficult-to-access area within the creek.
Although the exact number of people on board and the number of casualties had yet to be officially established as of press time, a local source said some of the occupants were believed to have died in the crash.
The source said residents heard a loud sound from the direction of the creek but were unable to immediately reach the crash site because of the swampy terrain.
“It happened this morning. We heard a very loud sound in the area where the incident occurred, but we could not get there because the place is a swampy area inside the creek.
“We are just looking at it from afar. But the police and military people later came around there for rescue. The occupants of the helicopter might have died there,” the source said.
Following the incident, security personnel, including policemen and military operatives, were said to have moved to the area as efforts began to establish what happened and possibly rescue survivors.
However, the Ondo State Police Command urged the public to disregard unverified casualty figures and await official information.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the aircraft crash in a statement on Monday.
“The Ondo State Police Command confirms the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday, 5th October 2026.
“Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, as efforts to establish the full circumstances continue,” Jimoh stated.
He urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information about the crash.
According to him, the police would provide further information as soon as credible details emerged.
“The public will be duly informed as soon as further credible information becomes available,” he added.
The circumstances surrounding the crash, including the identity of the aircraft, the number of people aboard and whether there were survivors, remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
