The hospital management has promised a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the death of Taiwo Godwin, who reportedly suffered an asthma attack.
The management of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Post-Basic Nursing student, Taiwo Godwin, amid allegations of medical negligence by a colleague of the deceased.
The hospital, in a statement issued on Saturday, expressed sadness over Godwin’s death, which occurred while he was receiving treatment at its General Medical Practice Unit.
The development followed reports alleging that the nursing student died after suffering an asthma attack, with an eyewitness accusing medical personnel of failing to administer oxygen to him despite his deteriorating condition.
According to a report by an online media the deceased was said to have experienced breathing difficulties while playing football before being taken to the hospital for treatment.
The report also stated that an eyewitness reportedly alleged that Godwin was still able to walk into the emergency unit when he arrived at the facility but later deteriorated.
The source further claimed that although oxygen equipment had been placed on the patient, the oxygen supply was allegedly not switched on.
The eyewitness also reportedly alleged that the medical team encountered difficulties while attempting to access the patient’s vein and secure his airway.
In its reaction, the hospital management assured students, staff members and the general public that an investigation was ongoing and would be conducted in accordance with established procedures.
The statement, signed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiola Ajibola, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, said the management was committed to ensuring that the investigation was expedited and conducted thoroughly, impartially and transparently.
It added that necessary measures would be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified and ensure that justice was served.
The statement read, “We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served.”
The hospital also pledged to cooperate with relevant authorities and stakeholders as required, while urging members of the public to remain calm and refrain from prejudging the outcome of the investigation.
“While we appreciate the concerns and emotions surrounding this tragic event, we urge the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without prejudice to its findings,” the statement added.
The management reiterated its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and the maintenance of the highest standards of care within the institution.
It also extended its condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, fellow students and the wider nursing community, acknowledging the grief caused by the incident.
The death has also raised concerns following an allegation by the eyewitness that another nurse from the same school died at the facility earlier in the year. The claim has not been independently verified.
The hospital did not provide further details about the ongoing investigation or indicate when its findings would be made public.
The management concluded by expressing sympathy with the deceased’s family and praying for strength for those mourning his death.
