…Muslim Community Celebrates Cleric’s Academic Milestone
Daud Olatunji
The Chief Imaam of the Community Mosque, Laderin, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Abduwaliyu Abioye, has bagged a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Islamic Finance from Al-Hikmah University, Kwara State, marking a major milestone in his decades-long pursuit of academic advancement, Islamic scholarship and public service.
Abioye successfully defended his doctoral thesis on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in the presence of Islamic scholars from within and outside the university.
His latest academic achievement adds to a professional and educational background spanning agricultural engineering, security and strategic administration, Arabic studies, Islamic scholarship and the development of Sharia-compliant financial initiatives.
Beyond his religious responsibilities as the Chief Imaam of the Community Mosque in Laderin, Abioye serves as a Deputy Commandant of Corps (DCC) at the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) College of Security Management, Ogun State.
His combination of public service, religious leadership and academic pursuits reflects an effort to bridge professional expertise with Islamic knowledge and community development.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the management of the Muslim community in Laderin, Abeokuta, which expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the successful completion of the cleric’s doctoral programme.
According to the statement, Abioye’s journey towards the attainment of the degree was sustained by dedication, hard work and an enduring commitment to learning.
The community described the achievement as a moment of pride, congratulating the Chief Imaam and praying that the knowledge acquired would benefit the Muslim faithful and society at large.
“We say Alhamdulillah for this attainment as we wish him more feathers to his turban,” the statement said.
The management further prayed that Almighty Allah would bless the knowledge acquired by the cleric and enable him to deploy it meaningfully in the propagation of Islam and the service of humanity.
It added, “May Almighty Allah put His Barakah in the knowledge and make it suffice for him as positive Hujjah in this world and the Hereafter.”
The statement concluded with prayers and congratulations, saying, “Barakallahu feekum and congratulations, Baba Imaam.”
The statement was signed by the management of the Muslim community in Laderin, Abeokuta.
Abioye’s academic journey began in the field of engineering before extending into security administration and Islamic studies.
He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, in 1998.
He subsequently pursued further studies in Strategy and Security Administration, with available biographical information indicating that the programme was undertaken between 2013 and 2014. The exact award date and qualification details were not provided.
His academic interests later extended to Arabic studies, a field he pursued at the International University of Africa in Sudan in 2011 after reportedly receiving study leave sponsored by the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.
Before proceeding on the study leave, Abioye served as the Deputy National Imaam of the NSCDC at the corps’ national headquarters.
His progression from engineering to security administration, Arabic studies and Islamic finance demonstrates the breadth of his academic interests, combining technical education, public-sector security responsibilities and religious scholarship.
His latest doctorate in Islamic Finance further expands this multidisciplinary background, particularly in a field concerned with the relationship between Islamic legal principles, financial transactions and economic development.
Abioye currently serves as a Deputy Commandant of Corps at the NSCDC College of Security Management in Ogun State, where his professional responsibilities are connected to security management and institutional training.
His career in the corps has also intersected with religious service, having served as Deputy National Imaam before undertaking further studies in Arabic.
Alongside his official duties, he leads the Muslim community at the Community Mosque in Laderin, Abeokuta, where he provides religious guidance and participates in the spiritual development of the community.
His attainment of a doctorate while maintaining professional and religious responsibilities highlights the place of continued education in the development of religious leaders and public servants.
Abioye is also the initiator of the Masjid Development Initiative Forum (MADIF), Abeokuta, an initiative described as an Islamic financing window operating through a cooperative system.
The initiative provides an additional dimension to his interest in Islamic finance, a field that seeks to structure financial transactions in accordance with Islamic principles.
Islamic finance generally prohibits riba, commonly understood as interest or usury in Islamic jurisprudence, and emphasises ethical dealings, transparency, risk-sharing and the avoidance of excessive contractual uncertainty and prohibited business activities.
Depending on the structure of a transaction, Islamic financial arrangements may employ models such as profit-sharing partnerships, cost-plus financing and leasing. These mechanisms seek to link financial returns to permissible commercial activities rather than conventional interest-based lending.
A cooperative-based Islamic financing model can potentially provide members with a framework for pooling resources, financing community projects and supporting productive economic activities.
However, the effectiveness of such an initiative depends on its governance arrangements, financial transparency, risk-management procedures and compliance with applicable Islamic finance principles.
MADIF’s focus on mosque development and cooperative financing therefore places Abioye’s academic specialisation within a practical community-development context.
His doctoral training could provide a stronger knowledge base for examining how Islamic financial instruments can support religious institutions, small businesses and community-based development initiatives.
Islamic finance has attracted attention as an alternative framework for organising financial transactions, particularly among individuals and institutions seeking arrangements consistent with Islamic law.
Its principles extend beyond the avoidance of interest to include fairness in contractual relationships, responsible investment, the sharing of certain business risks and restrictions on financing activities considered impermissible under Islamic teachings.
For communities seeking to mobilise funds for educational, religious, social and economic projects, well-governed Islamic financing arrangements may offer options for raising and managing resources.
Such arrangements, however, require proper documentation, transparent accounting, sound oversight and clear agreements on the rights and obligations of participants.
Abioye’s specialisation in Islamic finance, alongside his experience in public service and community religious leadership, places him at the intersection of scholarship and the practical questions surrounding ethical finance and grassroots development.
His new academic qualification is expected to further inform his religious and community responsibilities, although the specific findings and recommendations of his doctoral thesis were not contained in the statement announcing his achievement.
For the Muslim community in Laderin, the doctorate represents a significant personal and institutional milestone, with members expressing hope that the knowledge acquired will contribute to religious education, community development and the wider understanding of Islamic financial principles.
The community’s congratulatory message concluded with prayers for divine guidance, continued advancement in knowledge and greater success in the cleric’s service to Islam and humanity.
