    37 New Private Universities Get NUC Provisional Licences

    National Universities Commission has presented provisional licences to 37 new private universities that were recently approved by the Federal Executive Council .

    The universities were granted approval by former president Muhammadu Buhari administration shortly before the end of his administration.

    PLATFORM TIMES gathered that with the recent development, number of private universities in Nigeria is now 147, while the overall total of both public and private universities in Nigeria is 264.

    Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, in his opening remarks, at the event in Abuja, assured the new private universities of maximum support, and encouraged them to freely approach the commission for guide and advice in order to avoid mistakes that could attract sanctions from the commission.

    Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. David Adejoh, in his remarks, noted that despite the appreciable rise in number of private universities in Nigeria, there is the need for more private individuals’ investment in university education by establishing universities to augment the efforts of public universities and existing institutions

    Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari, in his remarks, challenged the proprietors of the new universities to champion the cause of education revolution in Nigeria.

    Executive Secretary, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, in his goodwill message, advised the new institutions to start well and strong, define their uniqueness and character, and sustain it so they can be known and identified among their contemporaries.

    The universities are – Rayhaan University, Kebbi; Muhammad Kamalud University, Kwara; Sam Maris University, Ondo; Aletheia University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State; Lux Mundi University Umuahia, Abia State; Maduka University, Ekwegbe, Enugu State; Peace Land University, Enugu State; Amadeus University, Amizi, Abia State; Vision University, Ikogbo, Ogun State; Azman University, Kano State; Huda University, Gusau, Zamafara State; Franco British International University, Kaduna State; Canadian University of Nigeria, Abuja; Miva Open University, Abuja FCT; and Gerar University of Medical Sciences, Imope Ijebu, Ogun State. British Canadian University, Obudu Cross River State; Hensard University, Toru-Orua, Sagbama, Bayelsa State; Phoenix University, Agwada, Nasarawa State; Wigwe University, Isiokpo Rivers State; and Hillside University of Science and Technology, Okemesi, Ekiti State.

    There are also the University on the Niger, Umunya, Anambra state, Elrazi Medical University Yargaya University, Kano State, Venite University, Iloro-Ekiti

    Also approved are West Midlands Open University, Ibadan, Oyo State, Amaj University, Kwali, Abuja, Prime University, Kuje, FCT Abuja, College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna State, Jewel University, Gombe State, Nigerian University of Technology and Management, Apapa, Lagos State, Al-Muhibbah Open University, Abuja and Al-Bayan University, Ankpa, Kogi State.
