The Ogun East Senator and former governor of Ogun state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene and attend to flood crisis in soke  parts of the state.

The Senator, in a tweet on Wednesday, said he raised the motion at the Senate plenary, adding that Sagamu and Ijebu Areas of Ogun East Senatorial district, where he represents, need urgent intervention.

In his tweet, he lamented the disaster caused by flood, recalling the incident of a 14-year-old student of Agbele Community High School who was swept away in Sagamu.

He tweeted, “at plenary today, I raised a motion for an urgent federal government intervention in the recurring flood disasters in Sagamu and Ijebu Areas of Ogun East Senatorial district as well as in other communities across the country.

“On Tuesday, 11th of April, 2023, a 14-year-old student of Agbele Community High School was swept away in Sagamu with many others injured and properties worth millions of naira destroyed. ”

In the same vein, he said Sen Sadiq Umar, representing Kwara North, joined him by drawing attention to Edu and Patigi Areas of Kwara North Senatorial district.

He therefore commended the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMET, for properly forecasting such occurrences, adding that the situation would have been better if other relevant agencies of government had been proactive in averting them and providing speedy support when necessary.

Recall that the Ogun state government, had earlier informed and warned residents living in flood prone areas, Isheri, Mowe, Ibafo, Akute, among others to relocate, however, many ignored as only few adhered.

A flood incident also occured on June 9, when the community residents were left stranded on the Lagos-Ibadan express way, as some residents in another community, on June 10, at Magboro, Obafemi Owode, were also overwhelmed by flood.

Daniel therefore said the Senate acceded to his motion by directing relevant agencies and departments to act decisively, assuring that he will continue to follow up to ensure prompt compliance.
