The immediate-past Chief Judge of Bayelsa, Retired Justice Kate Abiri, has been confirmed dead.
This incident was confirmed by the Chief Registrar at State Judiciary Headquarters, High Court, Mr Amaebi Orukari, in a statement issued in Yenagoa.
According to the statement, she died on Thursdayfrom a brief illness at the age of 65.
The statement read, ”with a deep sense of loss, the Honourable Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Hon. Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, announces the demise of Hon. Justice Kate Abiri, CON, whose sad event occurred on the 3rd of August, 2023.
“The Hon. Justice Kate Abiri passed on after a brief illness at the Glory Land Hospital, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
“Until her death, she was the immediate past Chief Judge of Bayelsa State.”
According to him, the state judiciary would miss the late jurist’s pioneering achievements in information technology, infrastructure development, and contributions to the legal community and the state in general.
He therefore said that the burial arrangements would be disclosed following consultation with the family.
Abiri was said to have departed from the state judiciary on January 13 after serving as top judge for 15 years and reaching the obligatory retirement age of 65.
After a protracted battle sponsored by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa branch, the deceased was named chief judge by former Governor Timipre Sylva in 2008.
Following the National Judicial Commission’s (NJC) recommendation, the NBA demanded Abiri’s nomination.
As a chief judge, the late Abiri was the first female judge in Nigerian history to swear in the most number of state chief executives, even beyond her own state.
