A middle-aged man, Ayodeji Obayan has taken his case to the Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Oke-Eda, Akure, Ondo State, as he seeks to establish paternity over his four children.
The decision follows a shocking revelation by his wife, Lillian Obayan, who recently altered their children’s surnames to match her new lover’s last name.
Mr. Obayan expressed profound anger and frustration over this development, vowing to pursue legal intervention in order to uphold his rights as the biological father of his children.
According to his testimony in court, Mr. Obayan explained that his 23-year-long marriage with Lillian had been marred by consistent turmoil and abuse.
In a surprising turn of events in 2019, Lillian packed her belongings and moved in with another man, exacerbating their marital issues.
Adding insult to injury, she then changed not only her own name but also the surnames of their children to match her new partner’s.
In response, Lillian defended her actions by describing Mr. Obayan as irresponsible, accusing him of neglecting his parental responsibilities, including the children’s education and welfare.
“My new partner wants my children to bear his name instead of that of their irresponsible father. Our children are old enough to choose for themselves,” Lillian stated during her testimony. Their children’s ages range from 16 to 22 years old.
Magistrate Olusegun Rotiba, the president of the court, appealed to both parties to seek a peaceful resolution. The case has been adjourned until September 28, 2023, for further proceedings, including oral addresses and a possible judgment.
