The Ogun State Police Command has announced the apprehension of Akeem Owonikoko, 33, a suspected armed robber, along the Sagamu – Ijebu Ode – Benin Highway on Sunday. Owonikoko’s arrest came after a rigorous 24-hour operation led by ACP Omosanyi Adeniyi, the Area Commander of Ijebu Ode.

According to SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Owonikoko’s confessional statement implicated an Inspector of Police known as Ola, who allegedly supplied the firearms used in their criminal activities.

The arrest has shed light on a complex network of criminal activity involving both uniformed and civilian individuals.

The suspect was initially spotted driving a Toyota Camry towards Ijebu Ode from Ososa. Upon sighting the police, he quickly diverted into a nearby close. Owonikoko, donning the disguise of a Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) uniform, attempted to outsmart the police but was eventually captured.

The subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle revealed a black cellophane bag containing 32 expended cartridges, 78 live cartridges, and a locally fabricated short gun.

Further searches at his residence unveiled a multitude of alarming findings.

A magnum pump action rifle, a double-barrel short gun, a locally fabricated double-barrel pistol, a stun pistol choker, and an assortment of ammunition were recovered.

Additionally, a silver-colored, unregistered Toyota Camry, a green Toyota Sienna Bus marked KNN 58 TD Ogun, and various other items including a liquid chemical, a black beret with an insignia of the Aiye Confraternity, cannabis, hard drugs, ATM card, power bank, two Apple wristwatches, cell phones, and a poisonous charm were also seized.

Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alamutu has ordered a continued pursuit of the remaining suspects connected to the case.

The Ijebu-Ode Area Command, under the leadership of ACP Omosanyi Adeniyi, remains steadfast in its commitment to fighting crime and ensuring the safety of the community.

SP Omolola Odutola reiterated the commissioner’s dedication to eradicating criminal elements from the state.

In light of the substantial evidence and Owonikoko’s statement, he and the recovered exhibits will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for profiling and forensic examination.

As this case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding criminal networks and the determination of law enforcement to dismantle them
