In response to a significant surge in cases of conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as “eye flu,” among school children, the authorities in India’s northeastern state of Nagaland have taken decisive action by temporarily closing all schools until August 26.
The move aims to curb the spread of the contagious eye ailment and protect both students and educators.
Reports from local government officials on Tuesday revealed that numerous instances of conjunctivitis have emerged across districts, including Dimapur, Chumoukedima, Niuland, and Mon.
Given the widespread nature of the outbreak, deputy commissioners of these districts made the unanimous decision to halt physical classroom sessions.
This step has been taken to break the transmission cycle, preventing further escalation of eye flu cases not only among students but also among teachers and parents.
An official emphasized the importance of this preventive measure, stating, “It’s crucial to prevent the exponential surge of eye flu cases among the school community.
By suspending physical classes, we aim to mitigate the transmission risk and protect the health and well-being of all stakeholders.”
In lieu of physical classes, the authorities have advised schools in the affected districts to consider adopting online learning methods.
This approach will ensure that students can continue their educational pursuits without compromising their safety.
Since July 1, the state has recorded an alarming number of more than 1,000 cases of eye flu. Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, involves inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white part of the eyeball.
The ailment can be attributed to allergies or infections caused by bacteria or viruses.
Its contagious nature is a cause for concern, as it can be transmitted through contact with eye secretions of infected individuals.
Typical symptoms of conjunctivitis encompass redness, itching, and tearing of the eyes. The condition may also result in discharge or crusting around the eye area.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the local health department has issued a comprehensive advisory.
People have been urged to uphold good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and refraining from touching their eyes with unwashed or bare hands.
These measures are expected to contribute to the containment of the outbreak and minimize its impact on the community’s health.
As Nagaland grapples with the eye flu outbreak, the closure of schools and the implementation of preventive measures remain paramount in ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents, particularly its young learners.
