Security Agencies On Alert As “Obi-dients” Movement

The Coalition of Pro-Democracy Groups for A Better Nigeria has raised concerns among security agencies regarding the activities of the “Obi-dients,” a group supporting the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Dr. Peter Obi, in the upcoming 2023 elections.

The coalition alleges that the Obi-dients are engaging in actions aimed at intimidating the judiciary and potentially causing unrest.

Accusations have emerged that Obi-dients have set up billboards strategically near the venue of the presidential election petition tribunal.

These billboards urge the judges presiding over election-related petitions to carefully consider their judgments.

This move has been interpreted by the public as an attempt to exert undue influence on the Nigerian judiciary.

In a statement released by the Coalition’s National Coordinator, Comrade AWA Bamiji, the group expressed their concerns and warned of a potential escalation of actions similar to the #EndSARS protests.

The statement called attention to the alleged display of threatening statements alongside pictures of the family members of a tribunal judge on social media.

The Coalition has labeled this behavior as unprecedented and indicative of a disregard for the judiciary’s independence.

They have reported the evidence to the appropriate authorities for legal action.

The controversy deepened when a video emerged showcasing a “All Eyes On Judiciary Rally” during the LP’s campaign for the Edo State Local Government Election.

The video, featuring Dr. Peter Obi, spread widely on social media platforms. Despite attempts to correct the phrasing of the message on a WhatsApp Group Platform, the situation escalated as a different flyer with a similar message was circulated.

In response to these developments, the Coalition has given a 7-day ultimatum to the authorities, demanding that they intervene and address the alleged actions of the Obi-dients.

Should no action be taken, the Coalition has threatened to organize mass protests at the Unity Fountain Square in Abuja.

The statement highlights the Coalition’s readiness to continue peaceful protests until the Tribunal delivers its judgment.

Concluding the statement, the Coalition warned that their extensive network would be utilized to identify and address the alleged troublemakers.

The group aims to prevent further intimidation of the Nigerian Judiciary by the Obi-dients and emphasized their commitment to upholding the principles of democracy
