In a significant turn of events, the Lagos State Government has officially lifted its suspension on the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), State chapter, and disbanded the Parks and Garages Committee that had temporarily overseen their operations.
After a year of suspension, the Lagos State Government has taken the decisive step to reinstate the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), State chapter.
This action coincided with the disbandment of the Parks and Garages Committee, which had temporarily managed the union’s affairs.
The suspension, imposed in March 2022, stemmed from concerns about the NURTW’s activities within parks and garages across the state.
A committee was established to oversee these operations during the suspension period.
In an official statement made by Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, the government’s decision to lift the suspension followed weeks of intensive mediation between the National Committee and the Lagos State Chapter of the NURTW.
This reconciliation process aimed at achieving a peaceful coexistence between the union’s state and national bodies.
Key to this resolution is the reinstatement of Musiliu Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo, as the Chairman of the NURTW, Lagos State Chapter. This move symbolizes a renewed commitment to harmonious relations within the union.
Toriola emphasized that the state government had taken all necessary steps to facilitate a peaceful resolution between the National and State Chapters of the Union.
He praised the executives of the Lagos State Parks and Garages Committee for their interim leadership during the suspension period and urged the Union to operate within the bounds of its constitution as they transition back to the NURTW.
Alhaji Najeem Yasin, the former national president of the Union and chairman of the Transition Committee, expressed his appreciation for the state government’s efforts in the reconciliation process.
He assured the government of the union’s support for the rule of law and the development of the State.
MC Oluomo, upon his reinstatement, extended gratitude to both the state government and the national executive of the NURTW for their support. He pledged the Lagos Chapter’s cooperation and commitment to fostering a harmonious atmosphere.
This significant development marks a turning point in the relationship between the Lagos State Government and the NURTW, setting the stage for a new era of cooperation and peaceful coexistence within the transport sector.
Notable attendees at the announcement included Comrade Aliyu Issa Ore, Alhaji Hassan Haruna, and Comrade Kayode Adeyanju from the National body, as well as Alh. Sulaimon Ojora, Comrade Olayiwola, Comrade Ibrahim Yusuf, Shittu Ganiyu, Yinka Hassan, Moshood Omojuwa, Agoro Ismaila, and Akeem Tijani Salami from the Lagos State Parks and Garages Committee.
The resolution signals hope for improved transportation services and a safer environment for commuters in Lagos.
