In a startling case in Abuja, a 36-year-old farm manager, Patrick Olusegun, has been brought to court on charges of stealing 542 chickens with a total estimated worth of N5.4 million.

The prosecution, represented by Mr. Stanley Nwafoaku, informed the court that the matter was reported by Mr. Ajayi Elijah, owner of Wale John Farms in Lugbe, Abuja, who reported the incident to the Lugbe Police Station on September 8.

According to Nwafoaku, the alleged theft took place in July, when the complainant entrusted the defendant with the management of his poultry farm, which housed over a thousand birds. However, upon conducting a stock check, it was discovered that 542 birds, valued at N5.4 million, were missing.

The prosecution stated that the defendant was subsequently apprehended, and during the police investigation, he failed to provide a satisfactory account of the missing chickens.

Facing charges of theft, Olusegun, a resident of Lugbe, Abuja, pleaded not guilty before the Kado Grade 1 Area Court. Judge Mr. Mohammed Wakili granted the defendant bail in the amount of one million Naira, requiring one surety to match the bail amount and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case has been scheduled for a hearing on October 10.
