The Ogun State House of Assembly has urgently called upon the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and address the alleged unlawful arrests and detentions of innocent residents in the state.
These individuals have reportedly been falsely charged by the police, often in collaboration with suspected land grabbers.
During today’s plenary session, Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo raised this pressing issue as honorable members shared instances of rampant land grabbing in their respective constituencies. Their concerns emerged while discussing the second reading of the State Anti-Land Grabbing (Amendment) Bill.
Speaker Oluomo expressed deep concern over the plight of hundreds of innocent residents who have been languishing in various police detention facilities, including Alagbon in Lagos and the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He said ” These detentions, it is alleged, result from the collusion between land grabbers and certain security agents at the expense of innocent members of the public.”
He implored the Inspector General of Police to swiftly intervene and ensure that innocent individuals are not unjustly subjected to false charges. Oluomo stressed that land-related disputes should be resolved through the legal process, and he assured that the proposed amendment to the bill, titled “Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism, Violence, and Other Related Offenses (Amendment) Law, 2023,” would establish a state task force to handle land-related matters.
The bill’s sponsor, Hon. Damilola Soneye, emphasized the urgency of the amendment, given the increasing prevalence of land grabbing in the state.
Other lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi, Minority Leader Olalekan Adeleye, and several other honorable members, highlighted how land grabbers’ activities have negatively impacted the peace, progress, and development of the state. They underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing this menace.
During the plenary session, other bills that received second reading approval included the “Ogun State Legislative Funds Management Law, 2023” and the “Ogun State Official Orders of Precedence of Public Officers and Other Persons Law, 2023.”
