In response to allegations circulating on social media branding him as “anti-Islam,” Professor Olusola Babatunde Kehinde, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has strongly refuted these claims.
He has called the accusations mischievous and baseless, emphasizing his commitment to being a father to all within the university.
The allegations emerged following protests by members of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) FUNAAB Branch against the university’s dress code regulations, particularly regarding the Niqob.
In a statement released through the Head of Directorate of Public Relations, Mr. Kola Adepoju, Prof. Kehinde clarified that the dress code decisions were not made solely by him but were in accordance with the university’s established rules.
He highlighted that the dress code was approved by the University Senate in 2017, a decision that involved both Muslim and Christian members.
Therefore, labeling him as anti-Islam over a policy that predates his tenure is unjust.
Prof. Kehinde also pointed out that he had made various appointments, including a practicing Muslim as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), further demonstrating his inclusivity.
The Vice-Chancellor urged members of the university community to adhere to the university’s existing rules and regulations, emphasizing the importance of unity despite social and religious differences.
He assured the University Muslim Community that he harbors no personal or official bias against them and pledged to remain a father figure to all religions on campus.
Furthermore, Prof. Kehinde implored individuals with grievances over the Niqob issue to seek peaceful resolutions and avoid resorting to violence, as disruptions could harm the academic calendar and the university’s progress.
