In the aftermath of a tragic incident involving a celebrity, Ilerioluwa Aloba popularly called Mohbad, a group has lamented that the integrity of nursing as a profession in Nigeria has been thrust into the spotlight.
The message of condolence from a registered Nurse,Thomas Abiodun Olamide,for Naija Nurses Forum, extends condolences to grieving Mohbad’s families and Nigerians, calling for strength in the face of loss.
She said the message serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of qualified healthcare practitioners.
Aniodun who Highlights the gravity of the situation, said it is essential to clarify that becoming a certified nurse goes beyond donning a uniform or scrub.
Abiodun said qualified nurses must undergo rigorous training from accredited institutions and receive licensing from the regulatory body, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), as stipulated by the law.
She added that contrary to misconceptions, nurses are not trained by doctors, nor are their qualifications acquired in private hospitals. Nursing is unequivocally a profession, not a vocation.
She said “the existence of “Auxiliary nurses” is a misnomer under the law; individuals are either registered Nurses or fall into the category of quacks.
“Regrettably, the prevalence of quackery within the nursing profession in Nigeria is a cause for concern, with severe consequences, including loss of life, as exemplified by the Mohbad case.
“The persistence of quackery can be attributed in part to a lack of awareness among the educated but uninformed populace.
“Public perception plays a significant role in perpetuating this issue, despite the inherent risks it poses to people’s lives.
“In a significant development, representatives from the Nigerian Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) confirmed the arrest of a suspect who lacked the necessary licensing from NMCN, branding them as a quack.
“The NANNM, in their statement, implores both the general public and media practitioners to cease referring to unlicensed individuals as “Nurses.”
“This clarion call for accountability and awareness comes as the nation grapples with the repercussions of allowing unqualified individuals to assume the responsibilities of genuine healthcare professionals.”
