LASU To Introduce 8,000-Bed Hostel Facility Next Academic Session

Lagos State University (LASU), previously a non-residential institution, is gearing up to offer a remarkable change to its student body.

In an announcement made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, LASU is now ready to provide hostel accommodations to its students.

An impressive 8,000-bed hostel facility is set to be allocated at the Ojo Campus, marking a significant shift in the university’s infrastructure.

This development follows the handover of a 98-bed female hostel unit by the Lagos State University Development Foundation (LASUDEF), a Non-Governmental Organisation, in July.

Justice Solomon Hunponu-Wusu, Chairman of LASUDEF, expressed the aim of transforming LASU from a non-residential institution into a residential one through the provision of hostel accommodations.

Speaking during a news conference to celebrate her second-year anniversary as LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olatunji-Bello assured students that they would begin to secure hostel spaces starting from the upcoming academic session.

Additionally, she announced the approval of free transportation services for students commuting between LASU Iba Gate and Iyana-School, mitigating the impact of fuel subsidy removal on students.

Furthermore, LASU is implementing a work-study scheme, enabling students to engage in volunteer work and receive stipends across various university centers.

Plans are also underway for LASU to co-host the African Universities Games with the University of Lagos later in the year.

To address classroom overcrowding, LASU is embracing a hybrid teaching approach, combining physical and online modes of instruction for large classes. Facilities to support this hybrid teaching method are being prepared by the university.

In an effort to accommodate the academic calendar, Prof. Olatunji-Bello has approved an extension of the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic session by two weeks, with examinations commencing in mid-November 2023.
