Renowned Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has taken a bold stance against allegations of fraudulent academic claims, inviting investigative bodies to scrutinize his credentials.
Soyinka’s call comes in response to an online publication linking him to academic discrepancies, supposedly originating from a Bristol schoolteacher.
In a statement titled “A Moral Call to Amoral Conscripts,” Soyinka passionately declared his willingness to waive any protection under the statute of limitations.
He urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Directorate of Prosecutions to thoroughly investigate these allegations.
Soyinka boldly asserted that if found guilty, he would willingly strip himself of all titles and honors accumulated throughout his illustrious career.
He stated, “I shall strip myself of any titles and honors I may have garnered in my entire career, from the most obscure to the most coveted.”
The Nobel Laureate condemned the circulation of what he described as a document filled with scurrility, drawing parallels to past campaigns of calumny.
He called upon the purveyors of these allegations to present their evidence to investigative agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC, within 30 days.
Soyinka concluded by emphasizing the gravity of these allegations and their potential consequences, stating, “Failing this elementary service in the public interest within the stated time, and/or if such allegations are yet again proven baseless, then, as a token of moral recompense, they should undertake to jump off the bridge of the symbolic River Niger, provided with life jackets to ensure a life of remorse after this ritual purgation.”
He also informed relevant organizations, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Pan-African Writers Association, and the Nobel Foundation, of his response to the allegations.
The academic world now awaits the outcome of this challenge as the investigation unfolds.
